Interesting entry. I was thinking as I was reading this that maybe the anti-histamines are what made you gain weight. Maybe because they were blocking the histamine receptors your leptin was not regulating your appetite correctly. Then when your diet got better you no longer took antihistamines so your appetite was normalized. Just a thought, I have gained weight while on antihistamines and I am definitely eating more than I used to.

Hi there, that was definitely part of it in my case, but I lost the weight before giving up the antihistamines. I continued to take them till July 2012, but lost the weight in 2010/11. The weight just seemed to melt off once the inflammation was somewhat under control. But yup, wow, I ate like a machine! The obsessive thoughts about food were the worst…

I have not been able to lose any weight the past 4-6 months. I finally took Benadryl again (not taking it for 1/2 a year backlashed me BIG TIME with my high histamine – LOTS of symptoms and pains) and in 5 days I lost 2 lbs! There IS a connection. We are not all alike. Some of us respond differently.

Absolutely! And don’t forget, antihistamines are not all the same…I didn’t gain weight on all of them. Also with histamine, I know many people who can’t lose and others who can’t gain! In my case I no longer have to worry about either. First time in my life. My body seems to have found some kind of balance. I couldn’t have quit antihistamines if I wasn’t on the diet I adopted. Just going low histamine helped, but I certainly was nowhere near as well as I am now! Glad you’re feeling better and thanks for your comment 🙂

I’ve been arguing with my doctors for years that there was something wrong, an underlying cause to everything but they insisted I was fine (according to their tests). My own research uncovered MCAD and HIT. The symptoms were like a checklist of my life and, low and behold, I was correct. At least it’s validation that I’m not an hysterical nut job. I’ve been gaining weight steadily over the years and nothing would budge it. In February I eliminated grains and lost 23 lbs/ 10 kg but the scale hasn’t moved since. Not an ounce even though I can still see weight slowly coming off. Any ideas why?
My symptoms are easing up slowly with a low histamine diet but it’s such an unknown disorder here, that nobody has any idea what to do with me. I’m very glad there are several blogs and support groups out there. -
