Nigella sativa seeds treat nasal allergies better than steroid spray

nigella sativa seeds lower histamine

The main constituent of nigella sativa seeds has been shown to be more effective than a commonly prescribed corticosteroid nasal spray at alleviating  lung inflammation [1].

The annoying thing about all these studies is that, unlike pharmaceuticals, the medical studies for natural constituents, is usually on animals. Now, ok, if it’s good enough for mr mouse/rat/pig, it’s generally ok for us, it’s still annoying to see over and over.

Here’s another good one one: nigella sativa and its active constituent thymoquinone were shown to protect the stomach from alcohol induced injury – meaning it’s likely to be an H2 blocker (like zantac/ranitidine) [2].

Interestingly, the same study found that nigealla sativa, as a whole seed, was more powerful than just its active constituent alone.

This interested me greatly as Dr Fuhrman’s teachings (I’m studying nutrition with him) always hammer in the idea that the plant/food as a whole is more beneficial than an isolated element. That the synergistic attributes of the plant are important.

Wondering how to work nigella sativa’s antihistamine properties into your repertoire? I LOVE them with Mexican food, especially black bean dishes, and also pretty much in anything Indian.

Take the hassle out of meal planning and healing histamine with this four week meal planner and stress relieving program.

Please remember we are all different and that we can still be allergic to an antihistamine food.

The Anti-cookbook and all liquid Anti-Detox Book, don’t treat any conditions, but feature a plethora of the high nutrient antihistamine and anti-inflammatory ingredients that have been instrumental in helping me feed myself on a limited diet. The Anti-cookbook features a six page list of antihistamine and anti-inflammatory foods and comes in regular and Paleo.

Nasal sprays for sinus problems are overused and there are so many that are addicted to these even though they come with such tragic side effects at times. It is good to see that there are alternatives out there.

What is your take on the nigella sativa oil ? I was wondering whether it will provide better results that the seed, which as you say is hard to eat in quantities.

    Hi Piya,

I take a spoon full of the oil nightly. I dissolve my quercetin tablets in it (to make it more absorbable – as advised by NIH funded researcher Dr Theoharides at Tufts).

I also find I react much better to oils in general (though I try not to use them much).

HI! So sorry I missed this 🙂 Indeed it is. I’m making it my mission to find as many as possible. Thanks for reading! YY

Hi Piya, I take the nigella oil nightly. I use 1/2 – 1 tbsp to dilute my quercetin tablets to increase their bioavailability, as advised by Dr Theoharides.

I have used both the oil and black seed capsules (whole spectrum brand from whole foods) & both are effective in opening up my sinuses. Lately though I’m choosing to mix one tsp of oil with medicinal potency manuka honey in room temperature water and take am & pm because manuka honey has strong healing properties as well. I have also eliminated dairy as this is a trigger food for increased nasal congestion for me.
