Interview: Hippocrates Institute director Dr Brian Clement

Last weekend, thanks to Gina S. and Jill Swyers of the Fresh Network and Hippocrates Institute, I was incredibly privileged to be granted an interview with the director of what I consider to be the world’s most prestigious natural health institute. As much as I’ve changed my diet over the years, speaking with Dr Brian Clement left me feeling like a slacker.

His top ten healing foods for allergies, histamine intolerance and mast cell disorders was especially eye opening.

Always ready to try new approaches, or intensify existing ones, I’m now redoubling my antihistamine and anti-inflammatory diet efforts thanks to my new masticating juice and dehydrator. Expect some fun pictures in the near future! I’m having nothing but green juice with sprouts for breakfast and lunch this week and feeling pretty incredible as a result.

I’m trying to get on the ball video-wise – this should be the first of many. I’ll be posting some thoughts/analysis on the Clement interview and how it’s driving my nutritional transition as well as an interview with Hippocrates Institute nutritionist  Jill Swyer.

And now an apology – this video was supposed to be shot by my cameraman, but he wasn’t able to make it. I was planning to be in the frame with Dr Clement, so that we could have a conversation rather than soundbites, but I had to shoot this at the last minute on my DSLR (not tried it before) and the tricky focus got the better of me. Many apologies for that. They’ll be much better in the future…

You’ll find the transcript of the video below.

My questions to Dr Brian Clement are in italic bold.

How does the Hippocrates Institute treat allergies, histamine intolerance and mast cell disorders?

Nourishment is a key component in doing this and most people are completely misguided when it comes to nutrition. They’re told things like meat is a good source of protein, there’s no meat involved, including fish or chicken. They’re told, as an example, that dairy products are good for you, there’s no dairy products involved in this – it’s all plant based organic so that we don’t confuse the body’s hormonal system with pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Of course we intervene with a lot of cutting edge medicine (non invasive therapies):  electromagnetic cold laser, H wave treatment, cyber scan – the list goes on and on. And when you get a person who’s willing to change his or her life, we see these people bring about recovery for themselves.

How important or counter productive is food elimination in the early stages of allergy/histamine/mast cell treatment?

What one has to do is understand is that nutrition is paramount in keeping the immune system strong.  Avoidance of certain foods is a given, but its about the inclusion of healthy foods and so you don’t give up everything and eat junk or eat nothing. What you do is that when you give up bad you replace it with good. You can read in my books, if not come to the institute, ‘Living Food for Optimum Health’ and ‘Life Force’; we portray what we’ve learned over the decades.

Salicylate intolerance, how will these people heal if they can’t eat the very foods that are richest in nutrients?

Well number one you have to recognise that when you avoid particular things, even in healthy foods, it’s not permanent and there’s such a wide array and a full spectrum of nutrients that it’s not as if you’re going to lack anything. So if we’re not going to eat grains because they have active ingredients in them that the body’s not responding to well, you replace that. There are other forms and other things we can use, other grains that you may be able to use. The world is big and wide and we’ve explored and pioneered it forever, and we don’t have problems with these issues. When you have problems is when you don’t have the knowledge and wisdom or are being counselled by someone who doesn’t have the knowledge and wisdom.

Is histamine intolerance caused by a gut in disrepair/leaky gut? How do we heal that if we can’t have fermented products?

Well I’m not really sure that the gut’s in disrepair in one hundred percent of histamine issues. I think it’s sort of an over reaction – sort of like a guy who comes back from the war and when he hears an explosion he falls to the ground. I think it’s a biochemical confusion that occurs, and yes the intestinal tract may have something to do with it but it’s more hormonal than it is directly an organ system. So what we do is adjust and balance the hormones with hormonal testing, and see what we can do to increase or decrease particular hormones in the body.

When you say hormones, are we talking (sorry I’m always focused on the female perspective!) About estrogen/progestorone?

No, it could be a wide variety. Estols, estrogen, progesterones, testosterone, and some of the nuance hormones.

A key component of mast cell instability appears to be chemical exposure, how do we deal with that in the 21st century?

Yes – it  ’s just unbelievable, everyone is being affected by chemical and heavy metal exposure – the numbers are staggering. I mean back in 1983, only 30 years ago from when we’re speaking, it was one out of ten thousand people who had autism. Today it’s one out of 50, and that is definitely chemical and heavy metal exposure. Other people endure cellular concerns with this – but what you do is detoxify the body, with infrared saunas, there’s certain methodologies, nutrients, that we use, certainly eating a very pure and natural diet, drinking adequate amounts of pure fluid, water and green juices etc, not high sugar, no fruit etc.

And then what we do is use a whole methodology of lymphatic drainage, neuromuscular work, and this expedites the process by two to three times, along with the saunas.

Could you please touch on the role of meditation and stress relief?

When a person focuses, contemplates, meditates, prays etc, the immune system goes up one hundred percent of the time. So when you’re trying to get the immune system to activate, strengthen and have muscle on it, contemplation, prayer, meditation, is as important as eating a good diet and exercise.

Jucing vs smoothies?

Number 1, when you blend a food, it’s ninety percent dead within 90 seconds. So it’s really not that nutritive. The last thing you want to do is drink roughage. If you notice, the major advocates of blending are either obese or emaciated. Because you can’t take roughage and pour it down your throat and not chew it and expect it to do anything but ferment. Juicing on the other hand, with proper juices and immediately consumed, anyone can digest. So people with any allergic reaction, any kind of histamine problem, this is not an activator, just the opposite, it actually tames.

My emergency antihistamine is a green juice – what would be in your ideal antihistamine juice?

Sprouts, sunflower sprouts, pea green sprouts, these high protein, complete protein foods. If I had certain kinds of disorders I might put a little onion sprouts, and garlic sprouts in there, because that’s actually a remedy for you too. Mung bean sprouts if you have other kinds of disorders, aduki beans sprouts. Then there’s the rest can be things like, depending on who you are and what your problem is, celery, cucumber, parsley, watercress.

You’ll find my emergency green juice and other antihistamine and anti-inflammatory foods in the new Anti-Cookbook: High Nutrient Antihistamine and Anti-inflammatory Recipes for Health.

This was very interesting for a number of reasons. Especially the discussion of hormones and gut health. It is the very paleo style diets that I have been trying over the past 7-8 years to heal my gut that seem to have caused or made me aware of a histamine intolerance. I have come to the realization that meat is not working for me but I have a big appetite and no need to loose weight (and am grain and dairy free due to genetic intolerance to both). So as you an imagine, my food list is shrinking. If animal flesh and fish are out for Mr. Clement I imagine eggs are too?
Thank you for the interview! I look forward to more.

Thanks for posting! This is interesting stuff. I did have two questions.

    1) Where did he get his statistic that autism is now appearing in one out of 50 people? I totally agree that the chemical storm we’re pouring into our food supply is bad for our health, but that number seems…really big. If I’m going to quote stats to somebody else I need to fact check them, and I would not feel comfortable quoting that without solid research to back it. 🙂

    2) I’ve recently started doing green smoothies as an easy breakfast–organic greens blended with fruit, herbs and occasionally almond butter. How does blending negate the nutritional value of food? And why does blended food ferment in the gut when masticated and/or juiced food doesn’t? I’d appreciate more details on the science behind that because I’ve always read that blending is better than juicing because with blending you get the whole food as opposed to juicing which tends to pull out the sugar and leave the fiber and many of the nutrients behind.

Thanks! I appreciate all the fantastic resources you put together here, Yasmina!

Wow this is eye opening. I think we need to balance all the different medical opinions with how your body feels and listen to your body. I found this fascinating what works for one may not work for the other so it really takes a professional to help you sort it through. Good thing my next stop is a reproductive endocrinologist, as I’ve been thinking about a hormone imbalance having had one when I was younger.

Great interview! I find it really interesting that he made the connection between hormones and HI. I suspect I have been struggling with hormone imbalance for years and am not surprised that this could be connected!

I am glad you are starting to offer some live interviews Yasmina. Thank you so much for continuing to explore this fascinating subject.

What Dr. Clement implies is interesting, although I doubt the raw food diet is for everyone. I especially wonder about this dehydrator you mentioned since I would think it would produce food full of extra amines.

Nevertheless Dr. Clement’s belief that hormones are more at the crux of histamine intolerance (rather than a leaky gut) is interesting. It would be nice to discover his reasons for saying so.

I am discovering that for myself its best to use a combination of modalities. Thus immune modulating herbs like ashwaganda, astragalus and even licorice root are helping along with better more effective histamine safe probiotics.

I tried a grain free diet for nearly two years and found it did not agree with me. The only grain that agrees with me is brown rice. I am extremely gluten sensitive and have found other grains may often be cross contaminated with trace amounts of gluten. I discovered years ago I definitely cannot have green drinks of wheat grass and barley!

I also think a bit of very fresh organic chicken now and then is very balancing, especially if one has type O blood as I do. But I would not expect a Dr. at the Hippocrates Institute that is dedicated to raw foods would agree with me.

In truth, your approach — using a bit of this and a bit of that — sounds more realistic and more appealing to me.

Yasmina, I thought you did a fantastic job of interviewing, recording, editing, and producing this piece. Nice work! What also struck me was that Dr. Brian Clement made many questionable claims, but provided no scientific evidence to back them in the interview. I wondered about a few of his statements, as well as his credentials, so I poked around for a couple minutes online and found that his credentials were listed as PhD, LNC on his Hippocrates Health Institute website. However, the discipline in which he was trained was not disclosed. I also noticed that the HHI provides a number of pseudoscientific treatments, such as an aqua chi ionic footbath. Given the extraordinary claims with lack of scientific backing, the lack of information about his training background on his website, and the bogus treatments being offered at his institute, it is difficult for me to put trust in his answers in this interview. While I won’t be following many of his recommendations, I do look forward to hearing from more interviewees in the future. Thanks for doing these interviews, Yasmina!

I appreciate Clement’s emphasis on contemplation, prayer, and meditation and find his theory about hormones interesting. It’s obvious to me that he’s not experienced working with people with histamine intolerance or mast cell disorders. It’s incorrect to say that anyone can tolerate juices. That’s just not the case at all. I also suspect that it’s a number of factors involved causing these issues and that hormones are just one aspect of the total puzzle.

Thanks so much! My interview with Dr Janice Joneja will be posted next. Tons of amazing info in there…

I would think the paleo made you more aware. I also just don’t think ingesting animal hormones is good for us! I continue to eat fish. I love it so much that despite contamination fears, I’m keeping it. Eggs are out for him, but I haven’t phased them out. I eat duck for the high b12 but infrequently. Thanks for reading and commenting!

  10. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Absolutely correct! I listen to my body above all else. It dictates what goes in 🙂 I think you should speak with Dr Joneja…

  11. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Thanks so much! Yes my hormones go mental at times – I thought it was the histamine doing it, but the other way around makes sense too!

  12. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Thanks so much for your comment. I just wrapped up an incredibly informative 90 minute interview with immunologist Dr Joneja – will be posting it next week.

No doubt the raw diet isn’t for everyone. But, I do feel that adding more raw foods is a good idea for me. At the moment I’ve committed to a raw breakfast and lunch with 1-3 green juices daily, plus sprouts.

Amines would be unavoidable in dehydrated foods but it’s the trade off for more anti-inflammatory raw food. At the end of the day, I try most things. Some work, others don’t.

I very much wanted to follow up on the hormones comment, but it’s well documented that there’s (at the very least) an adrenal connection exists. I might try to get a hold of him to elaborate on it.

I’m glad to hear that you’ve found a a way to treat yourself – being our own doctors seems par for the course with this condition.

That’s a shame about the wheatgrass and barley. The grains I can do without. I feel in my case it’s really just because they are inflammatory,

Very sweet of you to say that about my approach. At the very least we’re hedging our bets!

Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

  13. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Hi there! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment 🙂 Hippocrates is certainly one of the most established alternative treatment centres but as with everything, we must take what works for us and run with it.

I think that for some people, the belief they will be healed is enough to stage an incredible recovery and that’s where these treatments may be of benefit (such as the foot bath). A few weeks soaking my feet sounds like a pretty good idea 😉 but I wouldn’t want to be treating serious illnesses that way.

I hope you’ll tune in for my very thorough interview with immunologist Dr Janice Joneja next week. She had many many interesting things to say.

    Thanks again for reading!

    Hi Yasmina,

I am new to this – just told yesterday by dr that my histamine is high, glad I found your site and I will probably order some books too. I have Lyme disease which is highly inflammatory and have been on an Antiinfkammatory diet,. I juice with my vitamix every morning. I noticed in this article he said no roughage, would that mean the vitamix is not acceptable since it does not take out the fiber? Thanks much.

I’m wondering about his emphasis on organic greens: I’m sensitive to salicylates and read that organic farmers often substitute salicylates for pesticides; this can result in up to 5 times more salicylic acid than conventional produce.

I’ve been using organic produce since 2000 but am now wondering if I’ve been doing myself more harm than good. (?)

  16. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

    Hi Jody,

I’m afraid that’s not something I have info on. I would try calling your local producers maybe? Or the organic farmers association (to ask about added sals).

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

why no fruits…if they are low histamine and low Sals?.
Research Dr Robert Morse..iridologist, herbalist, raw foods esp fruits b/c they clean, detox, help kidneys filter, move lymph, help bowels by healing the gut, natural digestive enzymes…where as greens build…he feels we must detox first , build and balance after…look up raw figs.com he is pretty amazing
    thanks

thank you so much for the reply,
can you give me a ratio of fruits to vegetables you eat? And you eat histamines fruits and veg as well, don’t you ? for nutritional balance? wonder if the vegetables you are eating esp kale, chard, spinach all the sulfur veggies are playing a pert in detoxing you…and this is also a reason for feeling better…these are the detox veg and help to pull metals…see Dr Terry Walhs, how she healed MS on sulfur veg..very potent and Dr andy Cutler “amalgam Illness” and chelation… he says to stay away for sulfur veg b/c of their detox and pull abilities b.c they can re distribute Hg and this can be bad…thanks again for your replies . I have been sick for a while and trying different things to get well. I know i have high histamines but i think due to high Hg
