Mast cell & histamine releasing ingredients in vaccines

Syringe and vaccine bottle on white background

This article began as a simple one: to report a few studies I found which posit that allowing the measles to run its course, rather than vaccinating against it, has been found to prevent allergy development in later life [1].

Please understand – I am not suggesting intentionally exposing children to the virus, nor skipping vaccination against it, in order to safeguard them against allergies. The measles are not to be trifled with.

The study will likely make sense to you if you’re already a fan of the hygiene hypothesis that states that “a lack of early childhood exposure to infectious agents, symbiotic microorganisms (e.g., gut flora or probiotics), and parasites increases susceptibility to allergic diseases by suppressing the natural development of the immune system.” [2]

As I delved a little more deeply into the topic I realised I had to write something a little more substantial on it.

The issue of vaccination is a thorny one; it’s my intention to approach it simply from the mast cell/histamine/allergy/inflammation angle, so that so that at least we’re going into this with eyes open and armed with some information to help us better understand what to watch out for post-vaccination.

It’s not my intention to cast my vote in either direction, because thankfully, as of yet, I don’t have any kids to worry about. Please don’t ask me what I’m planning to do, because I still haven’t the foggiest. It’s going to be a toughie for sure, given the number of parents I correspond with who are convinced that vaccines contributed to, or caused, their child’s mast cell/histamine issues, or autism.

To begin with, here are a few of the commonly used mast cell degranulation triggering/histamine releasing inactive ingredients found in vaccines we and our children are getting:

Aluminium: specifically enhances inflammation and decreases mucosal healing of the stomach [3].

Citric acid: inflammatory [4] potentially induces mast cell degranulation [5].

Egg albumin: mast cell trigger, used to test anti-inflammatory drugs [6].

Formaldehyde: mast cell trigger [7], carcinogenic, messes with our DNA [8].

Mercury: used by researchers to induce inflammation with which to test their anti-inflammatory drugs [9].

Causes mast cell degranulation [10]

Causes histamine release [11]

MSG: potential mast cell trigger [12].

Soy: mast cell/histamine trigger [13].

Yeast: mast cell/histamine trigger [14].

Also: multiple dyes and preservatives known to cause mast cell degranulation and histamine release.

Add these to the fact that vaccines in general cause inflammation – yes, oddly enough, injecting a virus into our body causes the immune system (mast cells, histamine, other inflammatory agents) to go completely berserk protecting us from it.

No wonder some truly funky stuff happened just before I shipped out to Baghdad as a journalist. I had six vaccines in total, all at once.

As I said before, it’s not my position to take a position on either side of the debate – but I was truly horrified by most of the other inactive ingredients and to find out how the viruses are incubated (monkey kidney, bovine marrow anyone?). I would have a hard time justifying allowing anyone to inject those into my body. I’m not suggesting that people should not vaccinate themselves or their children. I’m just saying it’s good to be aware of what’s going into our bodies and that we should be aware there’s a possible fallout for those of us with mast cell issues. I know many of my tribe medicate with antihistamines before and after, so it’s worth letting the vaccinator know that you may need special attention, or they may need to keep an eye on your child.  I suggest googling Dr. Theoharides for his advice on spacing out vaccines for children with mast cell disorders.

Aren’t the amounts of those ingredients very small? Do vaccines really expose us to more mercury, aluminum, and formaldehyde than, say, a trip to Walmart (which is also perfectly capable of triggering mast cells, I realize)? How can we calculate risk and reward without knowing the quantities?

Hi there, that’s very true. Some with mast cell issues can trigger to something inhaled (like perfume), so it all depends on the sensitivity. When I had my last shots I was already feeling ill overall. I don’t believe that my reaction would be as severe now. My personal concern is more with the ingredients in general (I left out a bunch that were just something that worry me as a human being). We must always weight the risks and benefits and make an informed choice with our doctors.

This is amazing timing. I was just thinking last night that I should ask you if there was anything I should know about vaccines and histamine. My 3-year-old daughter always reacted strongly to vaccines (crying, arching her back, sleepless, face rash… all about 4 hours afterwards and lasting for a day or two). I’ve recently suspected her (and myself) of being histamine intolerant and we’re seeing massive improvement on the diet. I had a DTaP a few months ago (before I knew about histamine issues at all) and reacted to it for a few days (muscle tightness, headache). It’s exacting to finally have some dots start to connect and figure this stuff out. Do you know if there’s anything in a TB test to be aware of?

I’ll start with something humorous. Someone on FB posted a link that said something to this effect: “It’s just a little gluten; that won’t hurt you, right?” and the response on the same link: “Hmmm…it’s just a LITTLE laxative; how would that work out for you?” If people are allergic to something, they may indeed be very sensitive to it – even in very small amounts. With an intolerance, it probably depends on how full their bucket already is. But when it comes to things like heavy metals and chemicals, there is no established “safe” amount, especially for something like mercury, which is the most toxic substance on the planet that isn’t radioactive. And it has a strong affinity for the brain and nervous system. No, that doesn’t mean that everyone that is exposed is going to get an immediate reaction, but some do – fatally so. There have been NO long-term studies on vaccine safety and efficiacy in this country (though there have been in others, and not with particularly favorable outcomes) in general, but for people who, for whatever reason, are sensitive, it can increase the risk of serious reactions. I know you’re not taking sides here, Yasmina, and doing so can certainly bring on a lot of “heat,” but thank you for being brave enough to wade into the water. It’s an important issue.

As in celiac disease, it only takes a microscopic amount of gluten to set off the immune response. A single drop of soy sauce makes my ears ring for days and a normal serving of anything with MSG can put me out of commission for 3 weeks or more.

I remember standing in line at school to get the ‘new’ vaccinations in about 1965 but myself and 3 siblings did all go through measles, mumps, and chickenpox. We got the flu annually. Of my own 3 children only one had chickenpox. My now 17 yr old has almost never even had a cold. That really puzzles me.

But…I do genealogy and I bet if you checked you would be really saddened by the numbers of infants and children who died of those diseases we have now almost eradicated because of vaccines. My great gr grandmother outlived 7 of her 13 children.

This is such a tricky disease/syndrome. Your experience and expertise in so many areas about this is greatly appreciated by me. I was recently diagnosed with MCAD. I went in with a crazy, itchy rash all over me. I was going to get a Shingles Vaccination since I’m 62 and have had the chicken pox. The doctor and I decided I shouldn’t get the vaccination in case I’d react badly to it. It was a careful precaution, yet I sure don’t want shingles either. What to do… what to do.

Hi Alice, that’s also true. In my sensitive days just a tiny glob of organic, perfume free dishwashing liquid would set me off.

That’s interesting re your 17yr old, but doesn’t really surprise me. I never get sick either! Not with anything not mast cell related anyways. One of the benefits of having a ferocious immune system I suppose.

It’s so true re the diseases. One mother said to me that it’s the vaccinated kids that allow her to keep hers unvaccinated.

  8. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Hi Staci! I can’t find it right now but Dr Theoharides talks about a safe vaccination schedule for mast cell kids. Try looking on youtube or have a look at http://www.mastcellmaster.comyou‘ll find a list of all vaccine ingredients in the link in my post. I haven’t come across anything about TB specifically.

The heavy metals thing is truly worrying. I hope that one day pharmaceutical companies will make a safer alternative.

And that’s very kind of you to say. Thanks for reading!

  10. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Indeed – what to do! I have no clue what I will be doing myself. Till now I’ve taken some risks along my travels but I do manage those risks by knowing what I may face out there and taking care to be as smart as possible.

I know tiny amounts of something can have an effect, but to me it seems like a “blue on black” phenomenon, where I’m already being exposed to greater amounts of those ingredients even without taking vaccines. I wonder if having an immune disorder could make the inoculation itself stressful on your system, even if the vaccine were perfectly clean. And by “you,” I mean “me”! I have always reacted terribly to vaccines, but I’m not convinced the inactive ingredients are the reason.

I had my first seizure at 6 months old. No idea if it was post-vaccine. Cutting citrus allowed me to lift my arm again.
    Very interesting.

You might reasonably have aluminum exposure if you don’t take care to avoid it in cookware, foil, deodorants, baking powder, etc. And you might also have mercury in your mouth if you have silver fillings or eat contaminated fish (which I’ve been unable to do at all recently). But just out in public, you’re not going to be exposed to those kinds of things. More is definitely not better in any case. But I do believe you’re right about one thing: it could be the “active” ingredients as well as the inactive!

  14. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

    Wow – very interesting indeed!

Would mercury that’s coming out from amalgam in the teeth would cause irritation?

Great article, I learn a lot from your research. I have 4 children, and only my oldest is vaccinated but only up to 15 months. He is now 12 yrs old. But, he has always been my “sickest” child with the food sensitivities and allergies/asthma/upper respiratory/emotional brain, etc., etc. He also RARELY gets a fever when he is ill. My other kids almost always have a fever depending on the illness.

One book I read was by Dr. Stephanie Cave, MD, as she is a pediatrician that treats autistic children. It’s called “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Childhood Vaccinations”. She does not sway you either way, but discusses how/why you can catch said diseases, and the likelihood, etc. She also gives an alternative schedule for vaccinating if you choose to do so. She does not talk about mast cell/histamine.
