The inflammation bucket (why I can now eat shrimp)

the inflammation bucket

You’ve heard of the histamine bucket – whereby every little bit of histamine put into the body (food, animal dander, stress, pollen) builds, until it spills over into a reaction. You then need to spend a certain amount of time emptying it in order to feel better (antihistamines, green juice, stress relief).

But here’s a new model for you to consider – the inflammation bucket.

Rather than trying to keep histamine low, by not eating, by avoidance of triggers, I find that lowering the baseline of inflammation, through a phytonutrient rich, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory diet, meditation and happiness, allows me to fill it up with a bunch more histamine.

Sound improbable?

Histamine is stored in mast cells in the body. In addition to the histamine we get from foods, histamine is released by mast cells, as needed, to begin digestion, act as a neurotransmitter, fire up the healing process and much more. What if I were to tell you though that histamine is only one of a number of inflammatory compounds released by mast cells?

Might that change your dietary approach at all?

It certainly did mine. Rather than focus on eliminating dietary histamine, I realised that I was dealing with leukotreines (cause asthma symptoms, generalised inflammation and more), prostaglandins (cause hair loss, migraines, generalised inflammation and more), heparin (causes bruising, excessive bleeding, generalised inflammation and more) and much, much more.

So why on earth focus on just histamine?

Well, there’s a good answer for that, so I’m told, but sadly I don’t believe we have solid enough evidence to keep doing so. Many in the nutrition field believe that those of us with these funky histamine induced symptoms have a lack of histamine-degrading enzymes like DAO. They prove this to us with a test that has neither been proven to measure DAO where it really counts, a test whose results have been shown to fluctuate wildly from day to day, hour to hour. To make matters worse, we can’t test the activity of HNMT, another histamine degrading enzyme. I’m no scientist but I would think you’d need more than one marker to prove something? Ah yes, we often have our plasma histamine tested. Sadly this too fluctuates wildly and often indicates very little. But don’t take my word for it…check out my interview with immunologist Dr Janice Joneja for more.

I’m not saying that our symptoms might not be caused or aggravated by a lack of enzymes, only that it seems a little silly to stuff DAO supplements down our gullet after every meal in the hope of clearing up major symptoms. A little heartburn, acid reflux, maybe. Shivering cold in summer, vomiting after meals, hives, bone pain, dizziness, trembling, excruciating gut pain, inflamed bowels, basketball stomach, not so much maybe.

The fact is, that while dietary histamine is in fact problematic for many, as it was to me, I propose that once the overall inflammation in the body is lowered, the histamine ingested, as long as not wildly exaggerated, will not cause the same harm/symptoms.

What choo talkin’ bout Willis?

Yeah, I’m saying that histamine isn’t the bad guy here. Inflammation isn’t even the bad guy here: we need inflammation to heal. It’s a part of the healing process.  In this scenario, crappy diet and massive amounts of stress (proven to cause mast cells to release histamine) are the bad guys. And we’re not just helpless bystanders at the mercy of our genetics. I truly believe that people can heal. I believe that genetics don’t determine our fate (entirely), and that pollution, chemicals we’re exposed to in the womb, our parents’ dietary choices, our diet, exposure to stress hormones and diet and more, play a huge role.

Stress makes it impossible to eat

We all know it’s pretty darned impossible to eat when all wound up. It’s just a fact. I’ve seen this in myself and countless others I’ve spoken with. I don’t know how it works in “regular” folk, but in histamine peeps, you can pretty much bet on the stress hormones causing mast cells to break open, releasing histamine and other inflammatory elements into the body. So stress = inflammation. Inflammation = excess histamine. Excess histamine in the body = less tolerated dietary histamine.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m not stressed, I can eat more. Lots more. For many of us it’s not that we’re genetically unable to eat the strawberry, just that the environment we’re putting the strawberry into isn’t likely to react to it very well. Even if we are genetically programmed to react to strawbs (ie born with an allergy or histamine intolerance), there’s an excellent chance we’ll outgrow it or outfox it. The study of epigenetics tells us so.

I doubt it’s a coincidence that my incredible healing of late began when I really committed to my meditation practice.

The proof of the pudding is in the gambas al pil pil (so to speak)

So how have I come up with this inflammation bucket theory? While obviously based on the histamine bucket theory (attributed to Dr Janice Joneja), I believe that controlling the inflammation causing compounds released by mast cells, which includes, but is absolutely not limited to, histamine, through a high nutrient, absolutely clean diet, combined with intensive stress hormone controlling, inflammation and histamine lowering meditation is more effective than continuing to live on a limited, soul destroying, elimination diet for the rest of my life, in the hope of controlling ingested histamine.

Sound far fetched? I know it works, because I’ve done it.

I’ve lowered the contents of my inflammation bucket to the point that I even “cured” myself of a soy allergy!

collage

The progress I made on a low histamine elimination diet (which I then lost as my body became starved of important healing phytonutrients) gathered speed after just a year on a high nutrient antihistamine and anti-inflammatory diet as outlined in the Anti-Cookbook. Gathering momentum faster than a snowball attempting a cannonball run through hell, the last five months have been a blur of happiness, with one victory after the next jostling for space in my ever-growing thankfulness memory bank. (The above collage just details this last week ).

Soy sauce (it’s neither a health food nor a hurt food, I’m a sushi junky), soy nail polish remover, shrimp, tomatoes, avocado, pineapple, oranges, kiwis, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, mushrooms, mandarins, spinach, now all feature regularly in my diet.

I balance these out with a great deal of daily meditation, stress relief, indulging in activities that bring joy to my life, a phytonutrient rich, high nutrient, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory rich diet. I do not put any garbage in my body! I’m definitely pushing the boundaries of good taste a little (nail polish?? But it makes me so very happy not to have to re-apply water based stuff every time I reach into my handbag), a few glasses of wine over the last few months (just to see if I could), a few pieces of bread (no issue whatsoever, but I remain dedicated to a gluten/primarily grain free diet).

And to think, I was told I had a soy allergy just a few years ago! All gone now…tested and gone. I’m no longer even having to stick to a low oxalate diet…I certainly don’t go nuts with them, just like I don’t eat shrimp, avocado, yeast or soy daily. Nor do I EVER put junk foods into my body.

The power of diet and mind never cease to amaze me.

Please don’t forget antihistamine, pain killing foods can still hurt us, so please always check with your doctor before adding new foods to your diet.

I have not been able to keep to an elimination diet. How do you find the strength when you have cravings for things? I’m at a stage where my histamine reactions are not strong as yours were with anaphylactic shock and all, but mine are definitely annoying — acne & lesions, dizziness, dry eye, nasal allergies, asthma, fatigue, muscle aches, fungal infections, migraines & sinus headaches etc. I keep telling myself it’s not that bad just so I can eat what I want 🙁

For almost a month I cut out diary, lost so much weight, felt great, smelled great, and nasal allergies improved. Then I tried cutting out meat too, and ended up actually gaining weight, feeling awful, and and now I’m back at square 1. Now I’m slowly decreasing diet sodas/fake sweeteners and fluoride products, and my skin is getting better and my sinuses are improving, but now I have constant dry eye. it’s like a see-saw of constant adjustments and reactions.

I was wondering if you had any opinions/knowledge of fluoride? I am reading articles now about it’s tie to auto-immune diseases, like RA & lupus, and insulin disorders, such as diabetes. As far as I know my local water company does not fluoridate, but the area where I grew up during my childhood might have. my childhood town is largely affected by the obesity epidemic and the last two generations of my family in that area have had serious auto-immune disorders and asthma & allergies where this was previously not a problem in our family history. Now even pets, especially dogs are having major skin issues, allergies, and diabetes. I can’t help but think one of the common links/contributing factors is water…

Hi Kelly, before beginning to stress about things like fluoride, it’s best to sort out the diet properly. It’s not so much about what you take out, but what you add in. Nowadays, as suggested by Dr Janice Joneja, I advise people to add something for each food they eliminate, so that they don’t end up deprived. It is a learning process and also one of not missing these foods because it’s finally understood that they’re poison. Then you just don’t miss them. When you focus on elimination and deprivation it takes so much longer and the road is paved with misery.

Your site is invaluable. I have a child who I am convinced is dealing with MCAS, manifesting in seizures, Autism, severe speech delay, mito dysfunction etc. We are working with our docs and have made great strides by addressing the twitchy mast cells. Neuroprotek and Enhansa changed our lives. My question is, of the recipes in your Anti-inflammatory, low oxalate cookbook (with smoothie on the front), which recipes would you most recommend for as most kid friendly/tasty. We have a sensory issue and currently she eats 13 things. BUT- if I can get it in the Vita-Mix, I stand a much better chance. Mahalo and Aloha- Alecia and Maecy 😉

Wow and wow. I finally figured out oxalate was the main culprit in my “high histamine” symptoms after a terrible reaction to raw Swiss chard last fall. Suddenly intolerant to many foods I had eaten regularly up to that point. Realized my daughter also had all the signs, worse than me (major eczema, stomachaches, fatigue) plus many more food triggers. One thing that consistently helps me feel better is Dead Sea Salt baths. So many great minerals and trace elements must offset the oxalic acid in my system and help clear it out. This plus being very intentional about upping minerals and nutrients, fermentable gut prebiotics & probiotics, high fiber, plus soothing gut-healing herbals like DGL, quercetin, glutamine, has allowed me to reintroduce problem foods again, even a few fermented ones like yogurt. I use molasses, sea salt and bone meal and magnesium malate as mineral supplements and they work. Swimming in the ocean is great too when possible.

You are an inspiration! Slowly, I am adopting your ideas and feeling much better. Perhaps the most important lesson has been viewing food as a healing force rather than merely harming. Still working on that completely… I have been diagnosed with celiac disease for 18 months and it’s quite difficult not to be paranoid. I am now finding I have other issues- most likely mast cell related. There seems to be many of us celiacs out there with this issues and I wish someone would do some research on that! Next for me is meditation and stress reduction. Thank you!

So substitute Bragg’s Amino Acid for your soy sauce.
What do you think about tanning for eczema? My major problem? Diet he some but not completely.

  15. thelowhistaminechef Avatar

Hiya, I’ve never quite understood braggs. It still has soy…I know all the aminos and whatnot but still no good for those with a soy allergy 🙂 I think the sun, in moderation, is a miracle tool for many health issues. I would worry that too much of it, or too much heat, might cause more mast cell degranulation, thereby exacerbating the eczema. But that’s too much…hope it gets better soon!

I have a question though about folic acid supplements. My partner and I are trying for a baby and I have a box of folic acid I should be taking but I heard that they are full of histamine. What should I do?

Stress is a killer, but what so many think of when they think of stress is the job, or the marriage, or your childhood. Those are major & dealing with them in a fashion that is healthy is vital.
In managing my own health, Lyme Disease & working with my husband in this histamine issue I have realized that the visible signs or the way I feel with Lyme, or the rash & itch my husband is experiencing, they are merely symptoms, and all symptoms have a root cause.
It might track back to your childhood or the stress of a marriage, but there are plenty of people who have none of those kinds of stress but are still very sick
I suspect that even people with stressful lives have other factors which are causing the symptoms too, but are also a stress. Stress can come from not just outside situations but stress can be occurring due to to internal factors that are not just emotional, but are actually things like parasites, candida, in my case Lyme is part of my major stress.
When we are born we are usually healthy, but as life goes on we collect various viruses and bacteria in the forms of colds, flues, Chickenpox, the bite of a tick, etc. People always think when the symptoms of those issues are gone, so is the virus, bacteria or other pathogen. They are not.
Most all of these pathogens continue on in our bodies, sometimes taking on new forms, example chickenpox shows up later as Shingles usually following an external stress leading to a weakened immune system. It was always there, just dormant.
So we are always collecting new pathogens to lug around in our bodies. Then due to life, our lifestyles, the way we have been eating, not drinking enough water, the constant bombardment from stimulation of a modern lifestyle, throw in a car accident, a death in the family, coming to grips with a tough childhood or a wayward child of our own, our bodies become weakened, our immune system can no longer keep those growing # of pathogens in check and we start experiencing a growing list of health issues, sometimes going completely over the edge and ending up with sensitivities to just about everything we come in contact with.
Coming here and learning about the low histamine diet was a life saver for my husband. It brought relief from the constant hives burning and itching. But then it seemed so sad that eating little to nothing was going to be his life from here on out. Looking back there were signs his body was struggling even before he went completely over the edge. What pushed him over the edge is a long story, so won’t go there, but it wasn’t an emotional stress or life occurrence.
By nature I don’t give up easy and my head is constantly thinking, I guess that has come from me having to fight so hard with my own health, but in doing so I have learned so much. I had the opportunity to talk to a lady who is a chemist, and RN & a specialist in essential oils of 50 years. I explained to her what had been going on with my husband and how I couldn’t understand why he seemed to not even be able to tolerate the essential oils he had been using for some time. They seemed to make is skin reactions more severe.
Then she simply said, he is overwhelmed with Candida. Wow! that had not occurred to me. Candida can reside just below the surface of the skin and when he put the essential oils on the skin, it started the die off of the Candida, causing a severe break out. She said he must kill the yeast and so much will improve.
We have all heard about Candida a million times and maybe dabbled in focusing on Candida, but I never really dreamed it could do this to a person. Immediately we started a serious Candida diet, with nothing that had carbs or sugars, not even vegetables which have sugar like carrots or green beans. I read labels and kept carb intake as low as possible. This is not a forever thing, so don’t freak out, I realize carbs are vital. PLUS my husband continued the Low Histamine Diet. It was really hard, but he did it for 6 weeks. Then after 4 weeks he added a product called GX Assist which was designed to kill Candida and it will kill any other parasite along the way but does this using essential oils, so nothing toxic. 10 days of that, then followed by an awesome probiotic called PB Assist.
The results were astounding and quick. The itching completely stopped. After the first 4 weeks of the super strict part of the diet he started adding a few more carbs, a little brown rice & such. But the thing that has been most thrilling is he is adding back high histamine foods. Lemon (liberator) is a regular now, lots of it. He drinks lemon oil in his water all day long, every day. Lemon is so good for detoxifying. We have been adding back avocado to the salads. We even had sushi twice in the last week, soy sauce & all. Even had crab in one roll. No reaction. AND we even went way outside of the box and ate pizza.
We are still cautious and still eat low histamine at home, adding back foods a little at a time. It is so nice, I can’t even imagine how discouraging this must be to be having to eat low histamines for years on end.
Think beyond the outward signs, what is going on on the inside, what is causing the inflammation, There is a tangible reason for the inflammation. What is there that has now taken control? Start with healing your gut which includes possibly eating low histamine foods for awhile. Get your gut back in balance, that is where good health starts. I know without a doubt that our bodies can heal themselves, it is amazing to see. Start with figuring out the WHY, start with your gut.
Thank you Yasmina for giving us a starting point. Your information was so very much appreciated.

I completely agree – healing the gut is key. Most people have gut health issues these days (due to antibiotics causing gut dysbiosis). SIBO, candida, overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens, inflammation of the intestinal mucosal lining etc have to be resolved in order to conquer histamine and salicylate intolerance. And underlying infections (like Lyme which contributes to mast cell degranulation) will cause ongoing problems until eradicated. Yasmina, your inflammation bucket theory makes so much sense. And your approach is inspiring! Btw, did you have any gut ‘issues’ and how did you resolve them? (Currently in my own frustrating fight to get rid of SIBO.)

I received an MCAS diagnosis after an anaphylaxis to an antibiotic set off a ton of symptoms, leaving me unable to go anywhere or do anything for a few months (due to reactions to perfumes, car exhaust, heat, etc) and eating only 6 foods for close to a year (while my hair slowly fell out) and downing a pharmaceutical of meds I was prescribed so that I was always in a brain fog daze. Then I found your website and started applying some of what you’ve taught – – detoxed my house of chemicals and chemical-laden beauty products, started slowly adding high nutrient foods (I can now eat quite a few fruits and vegetables, and some grains) and de-stressed my life some by quitting a high-powered job and taking a lesser, lower-stress job. And I am indeed slowly healing, thanks to your advice. I am better around smells (although still watchful there), I can eat out at a couple restaurants that cater to my needs, I am on only a low dose of H1 and H2 blockers, and I am getting ready to travel for the first time since this hit – – to the wellness retreat! (only a few hours drive, but definitely a big step for me – – I used to not be afraid to travel the world until this illness left me afraid to go anywhere at all). And I know I’m going to benefit from the meditaton class. I look forward to meeting you, and I just can’t thank you enough for sharing your insights. I have a PhD and as a researcher I read like mad after getting sick (even came up with my own diagnosis although testing had to prove it), but the more I got hung up on details like genetics and which foods had histamine and high oxylate, DAO, etc, the more stressed I became as it was just overwhelming … I really needed to take this healthful/whole body approach you tout and it’s made such a difference! Not well yet, but think I’m heading there!

Hi there, I honestly don’t believe in any one specific diet or any set of supplements. I believe the body is more capable than we are of fixing what’s wrong, as long as we give it the support it needs through proper nutrition (without any gimmicky diets), stress relief and happiness in life. And thank you!

Hi J, I had what I termed “basketball stomach” for most of my life. My cousin was reminding me of it just the other day. Was really horrible. I have been in extreme stomach pain for 37 years, till changing my life. I haven’t done anything in particular to heal my gut, other than the quercetin and nigella seed oil. I feel that just generally killing the inflammation in my body resolved my gut issues. I don’t believe in any specific diet – my body is smarter than my conscious brain, so I give it the tools needed (lots of nutrients, leafy greens, juices, meditation, happiness) and let it get to work! My sibo cleared up by cutting out all sugar but fruit for six months. I know many use olive leaf.

Hi Laila, so happy to hear it! Thanks for letting me know 🙂 Dr Fuhrman advises no supplemental folic, as long as you eat a diet rich in leafy greens. My folic acid, since be a nutritarian, has been crazy high! Docs always comment on it but it’s my diet…it was always chronically low. I can’t advise you what to do, but I would take great care to make sure I have adequate levels. Check out Dr Furhman’s books/forum for more advice.

Thank you so very much for the information and communication of your personal experiences and learning! I suffered from histamine overload for seven years before being diagnosed by an immunologist. Your newsletter and cookbooks have been instrumental in helping me heal. I’m also gluten-sensitive. In my research for a link between these two issues, I discovered that the primary site of DAO production is the intestinal villae, those very structures that are destroyed by gluten in people with celiac disease (and perhaps gluten-sensitivity). This is likely only a part of the picture, as you know, but may be a part of it nevertheless.

    I LOVE Jasmine oil too. In fact I have a tiny 5 ML bottle that is so valuable I can hardly bring myself to use it. I stop just short of putting it in my safe:} I have to figure out how to make it last forever. The oils I use are far beyond smelling lovely, they have very powerful medicinal properties, capable of making significant changes in the body. For that reason the Jasmine that is used was very specifically chosen & is not readily available. If it doesn’t have the specific medicinal properties desired, it is not accepted. So at this point it can’t be purchased, it would just be to crazy expensive.I hope someday they find a quality source, because I would love to just be able to put it all over myself:}

I became v ill after the swine flu vaccination in the UK and 4 years later I am still struggling. I now know that histamine/inflammation are part of the answer, and maybe the vaccination messed up my enzymes (although doctors just think I am nuts). I am better at times and can drink a small amount of wine etc but this winter has been awful with numbness, tingling, feeling groggy and cystitis burning pain. I am really enjoying your posts, I only found you recently after getting totally fed up with not being able to eat nearly anything (even water gives me symptoms sometimes, lol). I have had auto-immune issues for years and became debilitated by it, lost my marriage, etc. I am slowly turning things around, largely due to dietary changes and yoga/meditation, but it has been slow and arduous. And yes, histamine-intolerance has been a BIG issue for me, though seems now to be a symptom rather than the real problem. Luckily, the answers are coming together as I FINALLY have realized that all of my health issues are really one big issue, it is stress/inflammation-based and the real keys are to heal my gut, lower all stresses, and retrain my amygdala! I got the book The Last Best Cure by the author you interviewed (so glad you did!!) and I have been filled with hope and gratitude to you both ever since. I couldn’t agree with you more on all of this. The meditation and the Gupta brain program that I’ve been doing has given me HUGE improvements. I would like your thoughts on two things regarding foods. I have very intense pollen allergies and this is definitely impacting what I can eat for veggies and fruits. Even if I cook them first they do not always work for me. This pretty much rules out a raw diet of any type. Any thoughts on this? Also, I am only 88 pounds and though I know that I do better without grains in my diet, I am forcing myself to eat white rice twice daily and every so many days brown rice pasta. I recently tried adding back in GF oats and buckwheat. I was able to eat them but feel I had some symptoms later. How do you gain and maintain weight without including grains in your diet?

In diagnosing myself with histadelia, I found out that it’s often a methylation problem which led me to learn about MTHFR, a genetic problem common to 40% of the population that causes metabolic problems and central nervous system problems related to poor processing of toxins and DNA replication and repair. My whole family has one of the MTHFR defects. Have you tied that into the histamine/inflammation discussion? If one has MTHFR and one is exposed to various types of toxins (smoking or folic acid), one is more at risk for many diseases and conditions, especially degenerative and those common to western society. the work around is fairly straightforward by taking a natural form of folate (like MTHF), methyl B12 and possibly B6. Since my son has been taking the folate, he no longer has allergies. Nice post. Thank you!

Chef, have explored under methylation in amongst your approach or decided not to. If yes did you try said supplements or focused on food w said needed nutrients to promote methylation? Did you find your body able to manage them? Many thanks , Victoria

I am a nutritionist/herbalist with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. I only wish it were so easy. I have been on an anti-inflammatory whole organic foods diet for decades before finding out I had histamine intolerance. Plus I cleaned up the candida long ago and have documented severe snps (homozygous in both of the critical DAO genes, the gene that codes for MAO-A and B (homozygous on MAO, hetero for MAO-B) and heterozygous for all HNMT genes as well as homozygous on the MAT gene that codes for the enzyme that turns methionine into SAMe. Also have many other snps in the methyl cycle including for both critical copies of the MTHFR gene.
While I can by-pass a few of the Methyl cycle snps with the enzymes’ products, for the MAO A and DAO snps it it not possible. They degrade histamine.
My inflammation bucket is always off the wall as well despite the purest anti-inflammatory diet I can do given the food limitations (I have not been able to eat any veggies grown under ground for decades due to the mold content, no grains, no beans, only low histamine above ground veggies, and most animal protein )Yes I know, high in histadine which converts to histamine, but I can tolerate no vegetable proteins at all, including all nuts and seeds.) and limited amounts of quinoa and buckwheat.
There are those of us out here having a really bad time of it dispite trying ever so hard.

See my post above. I too have many methylation snps and as a nutritionist who has taken Dr. Ben Lynch’s courses, I know and am using the work-arounds that are applicable to me. Taking methionine as a supplement has helped tremendously as well as 5-mthf, extra methyl B12 (B 12 receptors are homozygous).
But after discovering the latest link to my massive health problems, I feel like I am finally against a wall with no work around. Have both critical DAO snps and the MAO-A snp as well as HNMT snps. I now understand what is wrong and why despite all my knowledge and diet and environmental clean ups etc. I could only get so far. Been on a low histamine diet (unknowingly) for quite some time now and my inflammation bucket is still off the wall. Like I said above, I only wish it were as easy for some of us as Yasmina claim, through I love her blogs (So informative!)

Hi Linda, “I only wish it were as easy for some of use as Yasmina claim…”. Love, I NEVER said it was easy, Just the opposite. I went through hell, With all your SNPs did you experience daily seizures, year long migraines, peeing up to almost 30 times per night, dropping almost 50% of your weight, wishing you were dead, having almost a third of your hair fall out, vomiting daily, going into anaphylactic shock regularly? I did. And I came back from it. Being so covered in hives that I lost a modelling contract, being so sick I could’t use shampoo on my head for a year, scrubbing myself with salt and a loofah for a year. No love, nothing at all was easy. Not at all. I am very tired at the moment so I am being very honest – the difference between me and others is often just the fact that I am willing to go the distance. So few people are willing to make the sacrifices I have.

Yes , Yasmina, I have gone through almost all of that. My physicians did not know if I would live or die. And most of the time I would have chosen dying. I have made huge sacrifices. And to this day I still can only wash my body and hair and baking soda and water. I have been willing to go the distance. I even went back to school on the internet to learn Clinical Nutrition and biochemistry. (UK) So I do what you are talking about. I keep waiting for the ability to eat more foods and it has not come as of yet. Are things better than they were years ago. Yes they are. All the sacrifices gave me back some measure of health. But I am still mostly homebound and going to a store just to purchase food is still difficult and results in reactions, often times still extremely severe. Had I not gone back to school I would not have been able to learn what I have, so that I can at least manage my reactions.. But it does get tiring and lonely and still wish I could make more progress than I have.

As my reply to you above indicates, Yamina, Yes, I have gone through almost all of that. My physicians did not know if I would live or die. And most of the time I would have chosen dying. I have made huge sacrifices. At this point probably much more than you have. And to this day I still can only wash my body and hair in baking soda and water. No cosmetics at all still. (no big sacrifice really as I believe most all of them will completely destroy your skin and detox pathways. Yes even the one’s you now use. I would never even be able to have such cosmetics in my home, never mind even trying to use them! I HAVE been willing to go the distance big time. Yasmina, you have changed my life! I have been fighting the MCAS war for 12 years, and in the beginning there was no information at all. Just elimination, elimination until I was so malnourished I was diagnosed with osteoporosis (at the age of 50!). Lots of research later, and finding your blog and cookbooks, I’m starting to heal. I began meditation in a serious way in January, and have already stabilized my pulse and BP. I seldom have insomnia now too. I am with you on the inflammation fight now. Maybe I can actually go outside this summer (in Florida!)
Thank you for sharing your information!!

HI I just wanted to say, that I have an extremely clean diet and wanted to eat just a tiny dose of a histamine food, so I tried the DAO supplement. I have mast cell activation. Anyhow, I tried one of the top DAO supplements and it went terribly wrong. I used about 10% of the pill, I can’t imagine what would have happened if I would have taken more. I instantly started stuttering and had mini convulsions. It was extremely scary. Please start slow if you try DAO. I am so glad to hear that you are feeling well Yasmina. They say about 1/3 of the mast cell patients can have a remission. It’s been almost 9 years but I still hold out that I am one of them and I keep trying. lol

“So few people are willing to make the sacrifices I have” Yasmina, I saw this and it hurt my heart. I hope you don’t think that people who are not well are not making sacrifices. I have mast cell activation so terribly that it has now attacked my liver and kidneys. I make myself exercise daily with light stationary bike riding. I meditate just to be able to calm my body down a bit and join society. I give most of my paycheck to Whole Foods, and know that I am blessed to be able to afford it. If it’s not organic, I am probably not going to eat it. I can only have a few proteins, but indulge in a lot of veges and some fruit. I am 5’6″ and weigh 113 pounds, not on purpose. I cheated this week and had a handful of organic popcorn. I know I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t help it. I have cut out almost all processed foods. It has helped for me to change my diet, but I am nothing close to feeling good yet, but better. But I hope for it. And I understand that you have been through a lot and that is so sad, but am glad you are doing well. It’s inspiring. And maybe you didn’t mean that comment the way I interpreted it. But I just wanted to say if someone isn’t well, it doesn’t mean they aren’t making huge sacrifices. I can’t eat any grains, or chocolate, or nuts, or coconut. That leaves out a lot! I miss food so much. I know a lot who are making huge efforts, but we are all so different in our outcomes.

Hi, Do you remember the strength of the DAO supplement you took? I tried one that had 4,000 HDU and had no adverse reaction; BUT then I popped a 10,000 HDU one because I thought the lower dose was not helping, and within three minutes I was scarily sick. I second the recommendation to Go Slowly!
