Scientists test implantable vagus stimulator to fight inflammation

diagnosing histamine intolerance

In my recent post on the vagus nerve connection I shared some research on how faulty wiring in this heart, brain and stomach connection can cause us to overeat, affect our heart rate and state of mind, and that it may be involved in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

The vagus nerve is particularly important to us because it can prevent inflammatory cytokines involved in mast cell disorders from being synthesised/released specifically in the stomach, one of our most common flare spots (all references in original post). Sadly for many of us, the vagus nerve’s neurotransmitter, how it communicates with the body, is acetylcholine, which is inhibited by various meds regularly prescribed to many of us, including: Benadryl, Xanax and various other psych and stomach meds (Google acetylcholine inhibitors for a full list).

In the original post I talked about how vagus stimulation can reduce histamine-induced itching, regulate intestinal mast cells, fight mast cell inflammation and prevent or treat depression and other neuropsychiatric conditions, as well as outlining how we can naturally stimulate the vagus at home.

But now scientists at Purdue University, in collaboration with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are developing a wireless implantable device for “treating conditions resulting from the body’s inflammatory response”. Upon reading the news I guessed that DARPA involvement centres on the need for an effective post traumatic stress disorder treatment for the scores of soldiers being let down by the current system.

According to the website, their “bionode” will stimulate the vagus in the neck, thereby regulating the production of inflammatory cytokines. The program is planning to create a complete system that can be tested in human clinical trials geared for conditions like chronic pain, inflammatory diseases and, sure enough, as I thought, PTSD.

Rather strangely, though I’m not sure I would have wanted to embrace the cyborg look to treat my post-war PTSD, I’m really quite excited to at least entertain the notion to fight inflammation. What do you think? Will you go for it when this hits the market?

Don’t forget to check out the list of vagus stimulating methods available to us at home, right now.

Hmmm, it seems any foreign body/object under the skin would cause an inflammatory response

If the price is affordable, I’d try it. It sounds like it’s using the power of the body go heal itself which is great! As much as yoga, meditation etc can achieve the same thing, when someone’s in the midst of trauma and suffering those things can seem too hard to practice. I’ve been there, and often still am. Something to help tone down the inflammation via the body itself would be a godsend.

I am currently in a research trial that involves Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS). The device I am getting to try actually doesn’t go under the skin but rather stimulates transcutaneously, through the skin. Where does it stimulate the vagus nerve through the skin? Under a ridge of the left ear. The device is made in Europe by Cerbomed and is thus not FDA approved, but there is another company in the US that is working towards it. I do not know the company but I’m sure it can be found with a bit of investigation. The device is very similar to a simple TENS unit you can use to massage the muscles

This is a potentially dangerous therapy. Incorrect simulation of the vagus nerve can lead to death. I have had patients die on the bedside commode by vagaling down and stopping their own heart through an internal simulation of the vagus nerve. I wouldn’t recommend doing this. We don’t even really know how the brain works. Why would you want to manipulate it in such a way? If you don’t believe me, look up the mechanism of action for all of the various psych drugs. They almost all say “unknown”. We don’t know how they work because we don’t know how the brain works. This is reckless.

I agree it is dangerous besides people with Histamine issues could also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with Mast Cells Activation Disorder that are ‘behaving badly’ also likely MRI Supine missed Chiari, Stenosis even Tethered Spinal Chord all of these above can cause Vagal Nerve issues…I would first rule these out plus MRA or Venous imaging for Vascular EDS…sitting/upright MRI is best in connective tissue disorders…Some Research coming out of Canada very soon is also pointing towards low level Radiation injuries this work has now been submitted for Publication should be within next few months to come out…There is a lot more in these illnesses than we are truly being told in fact Chernobyl radiation expert has already published saying radiation is a Causative factor…Time will tell who is telling the truth for years we have heard Lyme this Lyme that now the FDA is clamping down on Private Labs coming out with false Positive useless tests…It is not Lyme that is 100% certain…Thanks to Gail Kansky’s Team on finding the real truth soon all done by Private funding thanks to donations…See the Radiation Page of The National CFIDS Foundation online & please donate 100% of donations goes towards state of the art research…The truth will come out too too many people Sick they have serious people backing their work…Think it’s not radiation then follow Dr Caldicott MD she is spreading the truth as well…People do not go one day to perfect health then next disabled yes Genetics play major roles but can Radiation injuries lead to these illnesses now in so many that answer is likely but until I see replicated proof I am still a skeptic until the Cause(s) is/are found I have heard for decades hype that never turned out to be any Cause I give up on hear say ‘show me’ the proven Science not Lies…
