Parasites trigger mast cell histamine release

Cat scratching itself

Mast cells are a key player in the immune system response. They release histamine and other inflammatory agents into the bloodstream to fight viruses and bacteria, parasites, and promote wound healing. Pretty much any invader can cause this mast cell activation, or a perceived intrusion, by food and beauty products for example, when the immune system is on a rampage. There’ll be a root cause for many dealing with mast cell/histamine related symptoms and inflammation, and resolving it will hopefully lead to recovery once the immune system is able to rest easy knowing its work is done. All references are found at the end of the post.

Parasites.

Nowadays nothing sets off my quack-ometer more violently than parasite “zapping”.

Well, that biofeedback machine where you hold the copper balls in your hands to diagnose/treat allergies and a few other choice pseudoscientific delights with a real potential to kill, or at least totally fleece people, maybe. In the years before become a (somewhat) sceptical journalist for CNN and the BBC I flushed a tremendous amount of money down the loo submitting to many of these questionable treatments. Nowadays I write about healing naturally, but using scientifically backed research, much of it conducted on poor little animals or in test tubes; but we work with what we have.

Sadly, parasites are a real thing, and medical diagnosis and treatment is possible, if only more practitioners were open to the idea, rather than driving us desperate folk into the arms of quacks.

Mast cells are a kind of army barracks that house histamine and other inflammatory soldiers till they’re called into battle for our survival. These cells release inflammation like histamine into the bloodstream as a first line of defence against parasites. Mast cells can control parasites in a number of ways, one of which is by regulating gut permeability (causing or fixing what some may know as leaky gut).

Histamine released by mast cells can also happen via IgE immune system response (like in allergies). There are many causes of a high overall IgE level, but parasite infection is definitely one of them. Interestingly, you may have heard in the last few years that people have been trying to cure allergies by knowingly infecting themselves with helminths. I know a number of cases where this has backfired, so please be very careful if you choose to investigate this.

Signs and symptoms

Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas or bloating, rash or itching of the posterior, stomach pain or tenderness, tiredness, weight loss.

Testing

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) your doctor should consider:

A fecal (stool) test/ova and parasite test (O&P)

The CDC recommends that three or more stool samples be collected on separate days to find parasite eggs. They must be refrigerated but not frozen.

Endoscopy

This test is recommended when parasite infection is suspected but not found using stool samples. It’s a fairly unpleasant procedure that allows the doc to examine the intestine to look for the little buggers or evidence they’ve been there.

Blood tests

Serology

This looks for antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the parasite.

Blood smear (not a live blood analysis)

This helps doctors spot any blood borne parasites.

X-ray/MRI/CAT

These are used to spot any lesions caused by some types of parasite infections.

The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMD) details something called the “Scotch Tape Test” that is so stomach charmingly gross that I can’t quite bring myself to repeat it. Do ask your doc about it though because it seems an inexpensive, pain-free, if insanely embarrassing, approach. That said, women regularly undergo some undeniably barbaric and humiliating procedures, so what’s one more, right?

Dietary approaches

Last week I shared a wonderful Indian spice that easily replaces onions and garlic in flavour, which is handy for those allergic to the allium family or low FODMAPs. It also happens to kill some types of parasites. Read the post here.

May stop parasites from growing…

Avoiding sugars.

Eating raw garlic, pumpkin seeds, pomegranates, beets and carrots (all low histamine), which have been traditionally used to kill parasites.

Eating more fiber to poop them out.

Zinc to support the immune system .

My son had some debilitating stomach cramps when he was in high school. All tests came back negative but I suspected some kind of parasite as it would come on every two weeks like clockwork. I treated him with peppermint tea, oregon grape extract (which I believe is very similar to barberry and golden seal), carrot juice and pineapple. He had to consume these 3 times a day for a week then we tapered off. I had him take the oregon grape 30 drops in a glass of water 1/2 hour before eating. He has been fine since.

Nice to see some of the ingredients match you list! Thanks for the post!

Gosh, Audrey I have Lyme and did not know MCAD could be induced by
high viral or pathogenic load. So MCD is another induced manifestation
of a burdened immune system that is doing its best to compensate….The
gut seems to be the source of all these chain ailments manifesting. If the gut can be healed or helped than that would surely mke the difference.
FYI: I have recently been taking a new probiotic that survives the
entire journey to the gut by 100%.

The strain used stimulate the immune tissue called the “Peyer’s Patches” The significance of this is that the stimulation of the Peyers Patches boosts T-cell and B-cell immunity, which helps the body fight off viral and bacterial infections. In addition, the specific stimulation of the Peyer’s Patches leads to activation of a cell called the T-Suppressor cell, which actually can suppress auto-immune and allergic responses. Also increases butyrate and other short chain fatty acids.

It is still early i that is has only been (5 days) thus far…..however to my surprise, the “absence” of a large distended belly, and inflammation, no matter what I ingest is quite remarkable. This occurred after the first day. However NO GLUTEN though, cannot mess with it. Have the SNP too so I don’t play around as it has caused horrible pain
in recent past. Gut, joints, nervous system.

There is some very interesting science emerging the spore strains having a significant
role in gut environment. The specific strains are researched from the
Dr. Simon Cutting at London University Royal Holloway, a world renown
    probiotic expert.

I am certain to have leaky gut, dysbiosis, sibo, and low SCFA, and cannot tolerate supplementing with L-glutamine at all. So the idea that this probiotic can help tighten the junctures in the intestine is definitely worth investigation. I am excited to see
improvements over the next 90 -120 days. The product is called Just Thrive.

what’s more is Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine has been attending to this stuff for centuries and western medicine is largely reinventing the wheel. If they spent some time looking at the herbs (there are hundreds of anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-parasetic herbs out there!! — they might learn something and not pretend they’re actually discovering anything new.

I and many of my colleagues and friends have had great success with bioresonance therapy for many different health issues including allergies. This author has angrily criticised the therapy without backing her argument with evidence except that unfortunately she had a bad experience. Considering the author has no tertiary training in nutrition, medicine or scientific research is she not a quack also, why should anyone listen to her? I enjoy the information connecting parasites to histamine intolerance but not the ill informed, emotionally charged, intolerant editorial.

Some “parasites” can actually prevent or help treat mast cell disease. Absence of parasites may be one of the main causes for the mast cell disease epidemic that is taking place right now.

It must be differentiated between organisms as many parasites are really parasites whereas others are classified as such but actually do nothing more than what many bacteria do in our gut.

I have helped myself a lot using HDC and later hookworm infection. 1 year after infecting myself my chronic mast cell activation disorder is much better allowing me to live a somewhat normal life.

This article is way to superficial and misinforming. It must be differentiated much more and much more details is necessary.

Successful infection come along with increased T-reg cells, B-reg cells, allover more IL-10 and generelly anti-inflammatory immune profiling.

  19. Jessica Avatar

Wow! Talk about emotionally charged and intolerant language, Tricia! Why don’t you provide us all with some scientifically-backed research that will give us all more confidence in the bioresonance therapy you and your colleagues (all naturopaths with tertiary education, presumably?) have had such great success with ?
I’m sure we would be as delighted as Yasmina if you can give us real reasons to believe that it is worth pursuing. Personally, I detected no anger whatsoever in Yasmina’s tone, but plenty in yours – which, sadly, lends less credibility to your words than to hers; however, here’s to hoping you will produce the evidence (and I will gladly state that I do very much accept convincing anecdotal evidence as valid and important, especially when it confirms / is confirmed by solid research) to convince Yasmina’s readers that there is some real validity to bioresonance therapy. Over to you, and all best wishes.

  20. healinghistamine Avatar

Hi Tricia, my stance on bioresonance is based on the lack of scientific evidence backing its therapeutic use. My readers are informed adults and I trust them to go beyond what I say on this blog in making healthcare decisions. As soon as the research is there I will write an article eating my words. Because that’s how science, research and journalism work: we re-evaluate our stance based on the evidence. I’m absolutely not angry in this post. And you’d be hard pressed to call me a quack given that I made it clear I’m a journalist and not a doctor. If you’d like to question my journalist credentials there’s a page on my website where I share my CNN press passes and you’ll see on Facebook that I’m a member of a number of invitation only CNN ex-employee groups.

  21. healinghistamine Avatar

Hiya, indeed, we need some evidence.

  22. healinghistamine Avatar

Wonderful to hear he got better!

  23. healinghistamine Avatar

Excellent points Santino. It was my intention to get some people out to get tested for the common parasites that trigger mast cell disorder. Wonderful to hear that it’s helped you, I know some who have been helped, others hurt, and still more who saw no difference at all.

  24. healinghistamine Avatar

Hi, I’m not hating on anyone. I am a huge fan of ayurvedic remedies and natural medicine – where the science backs it. I worry about people with a superficial understanding of body mechanics working with very powerful healing tools. I look forward to a future where doctors are given an education in modern meds and natural ones. And I’m a HUGE believer in the placebo effect. People get so upset when I point out that gains might be down to this but truly, it’s an amazing thing and I deeply value it.

  25. Jessica Avatar
    Jessica

With all due respect, Santino, although there is some evidence for benefits of hookworm therapy, due to the fact that several parasites – most notably helminths – downregulate certain immune pathways, the fact remains that their relative benefit or pathogenicity very much depends on the individual, and the risks are huge.

For those with badly damaged guts due to a previous infection by e.g., bacteria, protozoa, or other helminths, adding hookworm to the digestive tract is an action against which I would strongly caution.

There is a huge risk that the infection would cause severe epithelial damage, and it can be extremely difficult to eliminate helminthic infections when you realize that this is not the solution you had hoped it would be. At that point you have the problem of experimenting with natural antihelminthics which may or may not work, or – if they do not do the job – of having to use pharmaceutical antihelminthics and deal with their side effects. Although some of the latter are well-tolerated on the whole (e.g., Albendazole, Ivermectin), drug toxicity very much depends on how much damage the individual has already suffered to from pre-existing toxic overload (including that induced by excess endogenous and / or exogenous histamine production).

Yasmina’s article is not intended to be a Ph. D. thesis in terms of detail; it is intended as an introduction, and, as such, is well-written with correct use of the English language, and provides sufficient information for the reader to continue with more detailed research as he or she desires.

I have spent the past four years researching along with my son, who has nearly died a number of times now from multiple infections including the parasitic helminth Strongyloides stercoralis – a filarial helminth that is extremely difficult to eradicate. Adding hookworm to the cocktail of parasitic and other infections he has already suffered would be a guaranteed death sentence.

There are much safer and far more efficient ways to deal with Mast Cell Disorders and / or Histamine / Tyramine /Salicylate /Oxalate, etc., Intolerances than adding a parasite to your poor body. When it comes to identifying the person who is, in truth, being ‘superficial and misinforming’ behind a façade of immune modulatory jargonese, I would politely suggest you glance at the nearest mirror.
